Zongo Shapes

Teachers and childhood literacy experts agree that Shape Identification is an important pre-literacy skill. In fact, the same skills that help us tell the differece between a circle and an oval or a rectangle and a square are the same skils that help us disguinish the difference between P, B, and D or E, F and P. Luckily, there are shapes and patterns everywhere we look. But even shapes and patterns can have cultural context. Here are some shapes and patterns in and around Cape Coast. How similar or different are they from the shapes and patterns in your neighborhood? Do they look like the shapes and patterns you see in children's books? Some of these pictures show shapes within shapes within shapes. What shapes and patterns do you and your child see?
